Full Description
{1} Locally listed building.
{2} This was once a Marks and Spencer sign. It shows traces of a specific green which Marks and Spencer introduced into their branding in the 1920s.
The store opened here in 1929 and closed in 1969 when the new store on Abington Street was built. Gold Street was not the first location of Marks and Spencer. The company had been at 17 The Drapery, by 1910, as a Marks and Spencer Penny Bazaar.
In one of the photographs are the words

SPENCER
D The D must be part of LTD.
There is also an older photograph of Gold Street which shows a white sign with black lettering. This is likely to have been the sign of Smith Brothers cabinet makers and furniture sellers who sold the property in early 1929. Again no earlier text is visible but the sign looks to have been a similar size with white background and black text. Smith Brothers sold this property in 1929 and Marks and Spencer opened here later that year.
