Trial trench excavation uncovered a stone wall of uncertain date

Type and Period (1)
Full Description
{1} The earliest archaeological feature was a silty clay deposit of unknown date, found at the base of trench 13. A stone wall of uncertain date was also recorded, at the base of trench 15. The remaining trenches and test pits all contained only modern made ground, probably ground levelling layers from the construction of the Co-op building. Due to the limited view of the structure given by the trench, it is unclear what the function of the structure was, though its width suggests a floor or foundation. The date of the wall is also unknown, however it was sealed by the silty clay layer.
