Full Description

{1-2} The baths are depicted on the 1885 map and on all editions until the 1938 map, by which time this block had been largely cleared.

{3} In 1876 Phipps Breweries opened public baths using waste hot water from the brewery. Initially planned just for the workers use, they were eventually given to the town.

{4} By 1891 the public swimming baths in Northampton, situated between Cattlemarket Road and Bridge Street, were worked in connection with the brewery opposite. The heat that was generated during fermentation and abstracted by the attemporators in the fermenting vessels, was transferred to the water utilised in the baths.
