Please read our .

Summary

An archaeological trial trench was excavated in the area of land between Greyfriars Bus Station and Mayorhold Car Park. The former Sheep Street frontage at the western end of the trench had been entirely truncated by later development, but a series of medieval features, probably 'backplot' occupation, was identified in the remainder of the trench.

Full Description

{1} An archaeological trial trench was excavated in the open area of land between Greyfriars Bus Station and Mayorhold car park in 2000. The western end of the trench had been entirely truncated by later development along the former Sheep Street frontage and no archaeological remains survived. However, away from the frontage to the east, a series of medieval deposits were identified. They were sealed by a possible late medieval cultivation soil. A typical range of features was identified, including medieval structures, pits, ditches and gullies, as well as an oven, ranging in date from the 12th to the late 15th centuries suggesting that this area did not suffer the same decline as seen elsewhere in the town. Earlier remains were not investigated as part of the evaluation.
