Full Description
{1} Archaeological observation was undertaken during soil stripping. A possible section of a Roman road was unearthed in the central area of the main access road. It comprised a metalled surface of small to medium rounded pebbles set in a matrix of very compact orange clay. The surface is very disturbed and is approximately 5m wide. The metalling ran east-west along the top of the hill. The best preserved section survives on the east side. No associated ditches were observed and no dating evidence was recovered. The metalled surface could possibly be a road or trackway and could possibly be related to the nearby Roman Road of Walting Street, although no dateable evidence was discovered to support this.
