Summary

[Part of the Wollaston Quarry project] A Middle Roman field system at Wollaston Quarry, likely linked to a nearby vineyard (3505/0/7) and Roman Settlement 1 (3507/1/1), consisted of a sub-rectangular grid of up to 15 enclosed compartments, mostly used as paddocks, with at least one area for industrial use and a human burial. The complex featured three external entrances and few internal connections, suggesting the presence of now-lost crossing structures over the enclosing ditches.

Full Description

{1} In the northern part of the Wollaston Quarry site lies a Middle Roman field system, likely contemporary with a nearby vineyard (3505/0/7) to the north and connected via a routeway to Roman Settlement 1 (3507/1/1). This system consisted of a sub-rectangular, compartmentalised enclosure aligned northwest to southeast, measuring approximately 140m by 125m, and containing up to 15 interlinked, mostly sub-rectangular areas - primarily used as paddocks or stock enclosures, with at least one area (Area N) featuring an oven and a human burial. Three external entrances were identified: one on the southeastern side via the routeway and two possible entrances at the northern edge. Internally, few connecting entrances were visible between compartments, which were largely enclosed by ditches, which suggests the presence of now-lost crossing structures. The compartments varied significantly in size.
