Full Description

{1} The southern vineyard was found only through geophysical survey and then was only sampled by machine trenching in order to confirm its identification and provide dating evidence. After trenching confirmed its identification as a vineyard possibly of the middle Roman period, no further archaeological work was carried out within this part of the site and therefore, the full extent of the vineyard is unknown. The evaluation exposed parts of several bedding trenches aligned north-west to south-east. These trenches were similar to those of the northern vineyard (3505/0/7). A single bedding trench was completely exposed with boundary ditches aligned perpendicular on either side. There had been internal postholes/planting holes recorded throughout the interior of the trench. An area to the north of the bedding trenches was explored and revealed numerous small pits and possible postholes.
