Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
A stone-lined well located between the Jacobean stable block and the medieval aisled barn. It would have originally served the yard between the two but has now been blocked off from it by a later range of buildings. Possible medieval origin.

Full Description
{1} This is the only known well close to the site of the castle and the manor, but it is too far away from either to have been useful. It is more likely to have been directly associated with the medieval barn and/or later stable block and formed part of the yard between them. The yard was later blocked by another range of buildings and the direct association between the well and yard was severed. It is stone-lined and descends c3-4m to the limestone bedrock. Water flows into a sump cut into the bedrock. Probably medieval-Jacobean in date.
