Find Spot record 1160/0/620 - Inscribed stone, Wood Hill

An undated inscribed stone was found adjacent to the south-eastern corner of All Saints Churchyard in 1823. The inscription is incomplete, but reads: VQ CORRUIThOSTIS/CEREVICTUSERAT. A direct translation would be 'The enemy fell conquered by force'. The style of the lettering suggests a 17th century date.

{1} In 1823, upon removal of an old lamp-post, an ancient stone of memorial was discovered on the Wood-hill, adjoining the south-east corner of All Saints' Church-yard. The character of the inscription being imperfect, it is difficult to form an opinion of its age. Enough is seen, however, to discover that it refers to one of those saguinary conflicts which so frequently harassed this country in former ages.

{2} Dryden illustrated the stone in 1880 from the original which was held in the museum.

{3} The nature of the abbreviation is reminiscent of post-medieval posey rings. The style of the lettering is also post-medieval. Most likely 17th century.
