Summary

Cliftonville House was built in c1973. It was designed by the Borough Architect and built by Shepherd Construction. The west half of the building was originally occupied by staff of the County Borough Council and the east half by staff of Northampton Development Corporation. When the Development Corporation was wound up, it was taken over by the Borough Council. It is now used by the University of Northampton. Significant concrete murals by the Sculptor William Mitchell, formerly in the main entrace hall, are now located in the basement.

Full Description

{1} A two-storey building constructed for Northampton Development Corporation and Northampton Borough Council in 1973. it was designed by the Borough Architect and built by Shepherd Construction. The building encloses two quadrangles with fountains. There was an mural entitled 'Expanding Town' by William Mitchell in the main entrance hall at the eastern end of the building. It was formed from eight concrete panels cast at the Princes Risborough factory of John Laing Concrete, using their Faircrete process. A smaller mural, also by William Mitchell, was made up of six panels and called 'Flower People'. Mitchell achieved the finished affect by using felt pads, templates and freehand building tools.
