Full Description

{1} Archaeological excavation at The Green in 1983 found evidence of possible prehistoric activity. In the south of area B there were a number of possible gullies, stakeholes and a possible pit with characterisitic light-coloured sandy fills. Some were sealed by layers of strong brown sand from which four worked flint were recovered. Another flint was found in one of the stakeholes. At the north-east end of trench A, two possible prehistoric pottery sherds were found in the fill of a posthole. This feature, along with a number of other postholes and a stakehole in the same area may, therefore, be prehistoric. However, the majority of the features in Area A had darker and more loamy fills than is usual for prehistoric features in this area, so the pottery may be residual. The poorly defined gullies, postholes and other features can be compared to similar evidence from other sites in the area, most notably Chalk Lane. The difference in number of flints between the two sites (3123 from Chalk Lane and 17 from The Green) suggests that any activity is likely to have been extremely short-lived at The Green.
