Full Description

{1} Forge Cottage is an early 18th century building situated at the east end of Old Forge Lane. It stands immediately adjacent to the road. The building is depicted on the 1742 Knightly Estate Map as part of a longer terrace of buildings. It is also depicted on the 1885 Ordnance Survey Map when it appears that it was divided into two cottages. Forge Cottage is constructed from ironstone. The stone used on the western half of the building appears to be coursed squared ironstone and has quoins whereas the eastern half of the building is constructed from coursed rubble stone, which might suggests two separate building phases. The building is roofed with concrete tiles and an extension to the rear has slate tiles but the building was formerly thatched. The alterations made to the building in order to change the pitch of the roof can be seen in the gable ends. Forge Cottage, along with adjoining Chantry Cottage, are typical of the vernacular architecture of the village. They make an important contribution to the enclosed and historic character of this end of Old Forge Lane and to views along the lane towards the Grade II Listed buildings The Wilderness and Bank Cottage.
