Full Description

{1} This building was a milliners in the early 1880s, then a tobacconist/sweet shop in the later 1880s to mid 90s, and after that, in the late 1890s, it was a butcher’s shop.
It was offered for sale in 1901 and by 1903 was the home and business premises of James M. Burman who was listed in the 1903 Kelly’s directory as a dairyman. This sign is likely to have read
J.M. BURMAN
MILK CONTRACTOR.
This dairy business would have delivered fresh milk to people at their homes at a time when refrigeration was not available.
In the 1881 census J.M. Burman’s father was a farmer with 345 acres in a village outside Northampton. He was still listed as a farmer in the 1911 census, although living in the town by then.
The milk delivered by those who worked for James M. Burman is likely have come from the family farm.
James’ brother William had a similar dairy in Marefair, Northampton.
J.M. Burman was no longer at 8 Wellington Place by the time of the 1914 Kelly’s directory. Another dairy company was located here by then.
