Full Description

{1} Rice and Co Ltd, Eagle Foundary - metal works operating on the site for over 100 years. Buildings on site now appear to be modern (20th century in date). Casting house at SP 7568 5974 and further associated building at SP 7572 5979.

{2} Photographic survey undertaken prior to demolition in 1999.

{3} The earliest known documentary evidence for the Eagle Foundry was in 1823; an advertisement from Bretell and Barwell stating that they had erected an iron and brass foundry at the bottom of Bridge Street. In around 1905, Rice & Co left the Bridge Street site so Phipp's could clear it to enable additions to their brewery. The second Eagle foundry was established east of South Bridge. By the end of the 20th century, the site was closed down.
