Summary

The grounds of Lilford Hall were used as a hospital during the Second World War. The buildings largely comprised Nissen huts with a few brick buildings.

Full Description

{1} The grounds of Lilford Hall were used for a hospital during WWII. A railway siding was built at Barnwell for the transfer of patients to and from the hospital.

{2} SMR 1:10560 OS plan (sheet (TL08SW) depicts a large hutted camp in the parkland immediately north east of Lilford Hall. The sites of the demolished buildings and their service roads are clearly visible on AP's taken bewteen 1975 and 1983 - see especially NCC photos TL0384/001 and 0384/012.

{3} During the war Nissen huts had been put up on Lilford Park and a Polish refugee centre was established there. At least two of the refugees married local girls.

{4} Lilford Hall American Hospital, composed of a few brick building with all the wards and most of the special departments in Nissen huts. Letter discusses future of buildings after the war and concludes that they are not suitable to stay in hospital use.
