Summary

A broad bank, 32m long and 13m wide. The north end is rounded and the south end has been truncated and damaged. A skeleton was found in 1883 and further human bone in 1986.

Full Description

{1} Garage was extended into the south end of the mound about 4-5 years ago; human bones were found and reported to Field Monument Warden L.Armstrong on 12/10/86, along with a location plan. The feature consists of a low bank c.1m high rising to 1.5m high in the centre, c.20m long. The undisturbed northern end has rounded corners, the straight edge being c.5m wide. There is no indication of a ditch.

{3} North-south running bank 32m long x 13m wide. The earthwork is much spread by gardening activity. The north end of the bank is rounded. The south end has been cut short and is damaged by walls and hedges. No function or date has been assigned to the earthwork.

{4} An earthen rampart '24 paces in length (with) a narrow ridge; the west side of it is almost perpendicularly steep, the east is gradually steep; from the foot to the ridge is 9 paces'.

{6} Excavation in 1824 found the earthwork to be a simple earthen construction 28m long and 2m high.

{7} The remains of Wallow Bank are in a garden at the N end of the village of Chipping Warden the present length is c 20 yards, its height c 5 feet; and its construction was found in 1824 to be a simple rampart of earth.

{8} Note on the skeleton found within the bank in 1883. Field name: Willow Bank.

{11} This feature still exists with almost the same dimensions as quoted by Auth 7 but it has been slightly spread by weathering and gardening. It was not possible to determine its original purpose.
