Full Description

{1} (SP 52715885) Roman Cinerary urn found AD 1895.

{2-4}A Roman Cinerary urn was found here (c 19 chains SE of Red house Farm) in 1895 during the sinking of an air shaft in Catesby Tunnel {2}. It was smashed when found but one of the engineers or surveyors working at the time reconstructed it {3}. The photograph (sent by Major Attenborough) confirms the identification of the vessel as a cinerary urn.

{5}The indicated site is under crop; there are no surface indications of the air shaft. The present location of the find was not determined.
