Full Description

{1} The base of Badby village cross still remains on the green (SP 560 591). It is of red sandstone, and known locally as "The Stocks", no doubt because the stocks stood nearby, perhaps being actually fastened to the socket, as there are 3 holes on its upper surface

{4} Cross base at SP 5592 5892. See photograph. The name "The Stocks" was unknown to local residents questioned - and CRO research resulted in no further information. Stocks adjacent to a village/market cross are not unusual.

{5} Development in the village has fragmented the green and it appears that the socket stone may have been moved from the area now known as The Green to provide a feature at the entrance to the residential cul-de-sac (Stoneway). No trace of the three holes were visible and it appears that the already weathered socket may have been enlarged, the stone being perhaps used as a small drinking trough or bird bath.

What remains of the cross is so poorly preserved and is unlikely to be in its original position. Therefore the necessary criteria for scheduling cannot be fulfilled.
