Summary

The remains of a medieval market cross located in the memorial garden to the west of the A361 in the village of Byfield. The cross, which is Scheduled and Listed Grade II, includes a cross base, a socket stone and a portion of the shaft.

{2} Socket and shaft fragment of market cross.

{3} Medieval; shaft and socket appear to be contemporary.

{4} Village cross base stump. Medieval. Ironstone and limestone. Large square base of ironstone, base of octagonal shaft of limestone. The cross stands at the junction of High Street and Banbury Lane.

{7} The socket stone, apparently in situ, measures 0.6m square and stands to a height of 0.55m, with the top corners deeply chamfered. A fragment of shaft remains and measures 0.15m square by 0.45m in height. The shaft and socket are of different stone, but both appear contemporary.
