Monument record 663/2/2 - Possible line of castle defences

{1} The construction of a driveway to Elizabeth House exposed, in two sections, stratigraphy close to the site of the castle. Though one section largely comprised horizons deposited in the 18th/ 19th centuries the other contained a stone arrangement or 'wall' set against a possible bank. Sealed below the bank and wall were two small cut features. None of these features contained datable material though the bank and wall are suspected to be at earliest of 13th/ 14th century date on the basis of an inferred relationship with the opposed section. The medieval features either relate to the defences of the earthwork or alternatively they result from the excavation of an adjacent 'sunken' lane.

{3}Excavation uncovered a stone arrangement possibly forming a wall set against a possible bank. The bank and wall were interpreted as 13-14th century, the features either relate to the earthwork adjacent defences or represent an adjacent sunken lane.
