Full Description
{1}Excavations show Towcester as an open settlement in C1-2 AD on Watling Street;in the late 2nd century it was ditched and walled and reduced in area; it was deserted after the late 4th century AD;{3} See OS map diagram; {6} Various finds and features not indexed in detail; {1} Work by the Upper Nene Archaeological Society; 1-3 Link Way/ Bickerstaffes; 1966; {14} Finds all unlocated; including a hippo sandal; a bronze hand from a statue; an alabaster bottle (in Northampton Museum); 2 small silver axes (private collection); stone female funerary head (B. Museum?) and a considerable amount of pottery (in the Ashmolean museum); other stuff is in private hands; {1} The Lactodorum recorded in the Antonine Itinerary is identified with Towcester;
{11}6 sherds of pottery recovered from a test pit. Likly to residual as post-medeival material also recovered from same context.
{12}Ploughsoil contained Roman pottery and brick/tile.
{8}Several Roman coins found 1987 by D A Snow during the construction of the new bypass
Sesterius of Marcus Aurelius BMC 1398, found July 1988 by W J Jones in topsoil from the site of a new building (Towcester Building Supplies Ltd) by the new A5/A43 roundabout.
{15} An unknown quantity of Roman pottery was found during the removal of a brick floor in an outhouse at 223 Watling Street. It was found in disturbed ground beneath the floor and had been thrown into a skip. Inspection of the site discovered no new finds and the site was considered to be too disturbed to be of any further archaeological value. Pottery included Samian (one had a stamp of Niceph - Nicerphor of Lezoux c 40-170 AD), black burnished ware, amphorae and Northampton ware.
