Full Description

{1} Finds of 1975 from building development, consisting of pottery and coins, also a C1st bronze brooch. Finds were recovered from the south-west side of Watling Street opposite the former Railway Station. RCHME cited grid reference SP68774935, this grid reference differs from other records and the map location attached to this monument record.

{3} North of the town across the Tove Woodfield suggests the presence of a northern cemetery running broadly from the old railway station to Elm Lodge. Roman inhumations were recorded to the west of Watling Street in 1975 during construction at SP 6877 4935. However, the general nature of the burials suggests these are more likely to be small groups of boundary burials.
