Monument record 726/3/1 - Undated inhumation and finds, Silverstone Brook

Archaeological observation of works by Anglian Water in 1978 identified an undated inhumation on the west side of the River Tove and fragments of skull of the east side. The burials are likely to be Roman.

{1} Inhumation 1.4m below subsoil, just above natural gravel. No dating evidence.

{2} Finds found in 1978 (?) during drainage work included a skeleton exposed in one of the sections; it was east-west orientated on the alignment of the trench and was 1.40m deep below the topsoil, cut slightly into the natural gravel; the grave was c. 1.90m long and had a fill consisting of a stoney grey clay, sealed by a thick sticky clay layer at c. 0.90m deep; 4 undated pottery sherds were found from the grey layer immediately above the grave (information from G.
