Full Description

{3} Trial trench excavation uncovered a long-lived boundary, probably of a property fronting onto Old Town Road. The line of the boundary was preserved by a linear stone feature. The majority of the evidence for the medieval period was of rubbish diposal; pits of medieval date were discovered in all trenches apart from one. Stone walls and surfaces may mark a building of late medieval or early post-medieval date.

{5} Archaeological evalution was carried out in the grounds of Egerton House comprising the excavation of seven trenches. It was anticipated that Saxon settlement remains might be seen, although only a small amount of Saxon pottery was recovered as residual finds in later contexts. A few sherds of Ipswich Ware were a significant find in being one of the most westerly finds of this ware. A possible boundary ditch and a large number of pits of medieval date were uncovered but no definiate evidence of buildings.
