Full Description

{1} Documentary evidence; medieval hermitage with chantry chapel founded by Balliol family; possibly by Devorguilla in C13th at the hermitage.

{2} There was a chantry chapel outside the church at Fotheringhay (Name TL0693), apparently founded by Balliol family "not improbably (by) Devorgvilla" (13th century), at the Hermitage. A hermitage was in existence at Fotheringhay in 1176.

{3} Hermitage here in 4th Edward III (1330).

{4} Property of hermitage was valued at £4.13.4 in 1254.

{5} Abbot of Sawtre held 1 messuage called the 'ermytage' and 1 carucate to find a chaplain for divine service on Monday, Wednesday and Friday every week for the soul of John Baliol and his ancestors lords of castle and manor.
