Full Description
{1}Documentary evidence of the Hospital of St John and St Martin which was founded before 1282 and dissolved in 1535; it was granted to Cotterstock College in 1329 and by the time of Henry VIII it seems merely to have become a beneficed chantry being styled as a free chapel;
{2} It was a free chapel by 1535 with an income of £5.5; by then it had ceased to be a chapel;
{3} In the village of Perio was a small hospital dedicated to St John and St Martin. It is said to have been sited 0.75 miles from Southwick church; among the placenames of Cotterstock is that of 'Monks Sink' where it is said that there was a chapel; Monks Synke is located at TL03399195;
{5}Fieldname: Chapel Close at TL04359209; Monks Synke at TL03399195; Perio Chapel Close at TL04359209
{6, 7} Parch marks of rectangular buildings set around a possible courtyard; these may be a medieval hospital site?
{8} "Among the place-names found in Cotterstock is 'Monks Sink' where, according to local tradition there was a building with a Chapel dedicated to St John in connection with the College."
{9} An Estate map, anon. drawn c 1600, belonging to Col Caperon, Southwick Hall shows "Monks Synke" at TL 03399195 and "Perio Chapel Close" at TL 04359209.
{10} 'Monks Synke' seems to be applied on the Estate Map to a brook or ditch (which may have extended eastward towards Perio). In spite of the 'tradition' connected with it {8}, it seems more probable that 'Perio Chapel Close' commemorates the true site. This contains disturbances of D M V character (See HER no 811), one or two of which, although amorphous, are of sufficient size (and possible E-W orientation) to conceal the foundations of a Chapel.
