Summary

Possible medieval pottery kiln, part of the Stanion pottery industry, was identified during sewer trenching in the garden of the Manor House, Stanion in 1961. The kiln was indicated by finds of mainly green-glazed pottery and would have been in production sometime between the mid 12th century and mid 14th century.

Full Description

{1} In 1961 a medieval pottery kiln and large quantities of pottery were revealed during sewer laying in the garden of the Manor House.
Few details of the pottery industry at Stanion are known, but they produced pottery of a similar type to Lyveden ware and probably of the same date.

{3} A kiln was seen in a sewer trench in the Manor House garden.

{4} At SP 91508701 in the garden of Manor House, Stanion, a prob. Md. Kiln was found during sewer laying May 1961. Plentiful sherds were noted, mainly dark green glaze.

{5} Sewers have been laid to several houses in the immediate vicinity of the Manor House and many sherds of a similar nature have been turned up.
