Monument record 895/0/2 - Possible early Roman roadside enclosures

Cropmarks of enclosures and ditches and finds of Roman pottery suggest a possible settlement north west of Bannaventa.

{1} Roman Settlement (SP 608649), lies N.W. of Bannaventa and W of Watling Street, on glacial sands and gravels at 125 m above OD. Air photographs (in NMR) show very distinctly a number of conjoined
enclosures and ditches including one small and one very large circular feature. A small quantity of Roman pottery has been found on the site.

{2}The earliest significant occupation known from the excavations can be dated to the mid-first century AD when a number of ditched boundaries probably defining enclosures was laid out along Watling Street. Although much of the area within 100m of the road may have been bounded at this time there is little direct evidence for domestic occupation in the first century AD.
