Full Description

{1} A mound of stone 15m diameter and 1m high. Damaged by a hole in the top. Likely to be a cairn, see Wakerley Wood. Lies within Westhay medieval wood. FE Fineshade Report update 2001, site 9.

{3} Inspection confirmed the presence of a low earthwork but one that is much less well defined than those in Wakerley Wood. Hall also records the presence of a later woodland bank hereabouts though it was unclear from rapid inspection how far this is clearly definable in the vicinity of the cairn. Only a very limited quantity of small limestone fragments were observed on the surface of the earthwork, with by far the largest amount being derived from a number of animal burrows (uncertain animal) present on its NE side. The hole referred to by Hall lies further to the SW, irregular in nature and filled with wood debris. No clear earthwork evidence was observed for the presence of an enclosing ditch.
