Summary

Excavations beneath a shop floor found possible evidence of medieval iron-working close to the modern frontage. Further back, beneath a possible 19th-century extension, post-medieval pottery was recovered from a possible garden soil

Full Description

{1} Excavations in the soil beneath the shop floor during internal reconstruction in March 1976 revealed a number of finds. Between 2-5m from frontage a burnt reddened area was found with black charcoal-rich soil adjacent; area produced iron slag and a few medieval pot sherds;
Between 6-12m from the frontage beneath what may have been a C19th rear extension were found many C17-19th pot sherds and several C17th clay pipe fragments in possible disturbed garden soil.
