Monument record 1160/0/121 - Medieval Occupation Debris, George Row

An archaeological watching brief undertaken in 1975 identified deep deposits of medieval occupation debris, as well as at least one road surface.

{1} Build-up of layers up to 3m deep with medieval pottery;,

{2} Series of soil & stone layers & at least 1 metalled road level found; natural encountered at depths between 1.02m & 1.68m; finds include leather offcuts & medieval sherds & animal bones;

{3}Sections in deep narrow trenches showed a build up of about 3ft overlying natural ironstone;

{4} }July 1975; GPO trenches on George Row; possible small pit or ditch up to 1.8m below road surface; contained several early med pot sherds & few animal bones; SP75486043;
