Monument record 1160/200/10 - Medieval/ post-medieval building remains, Gold Street

Fire damaged remains of buildings observed in 1889- presumably of those destroyed in the fire of 1675. Also found was medieval pottery

{1} C12-14th cooking pot & cresset lamp base found [no record of cresset lamp found elsewhere within references so may be incorrect];

{2} Pot & masonry; medieval cooking pot;

{3} Evidence revealed of the Great Fire in C17th; thick layer of burnt debris & ruins of buildings standing at time; burnt layer 2ft thick in places; old foundation wall revealed & carved stone capital & fragment of probable C12th pillar; medieval cooking pot from site now in Northampton Museum; also further pot of circa 1650 found;

{4} Cooking pot found;

{5} 18ft below the present surface a carved stone capital with foliage, and about 10in of column; 20-25ft down remains of an old wall; supposed Norman pottery and 17th century pottery.
