Monument record 1160/321/1 - Site of limited medieval activity

A pit and an area of burning were observed during a watching brief. Archaeological deposits closer to the road frontage had been destroyed by later cellars

{1}Early levels largely destroyed by basements; mainly medieval & post medieval build up of sands & clays underlying modern concrete & rubble deposits; pit & burnt area contained late medieval pottery;

{2}Up to 1.30m of disturbed deposits overlay natural Northampton Sand; deposits were mainly post-medieval or later; traces of possible earlier features were however noted with pottery recovered of C14-15th date;

{3}A watching brief carried out by NAU during rebuilding works on a site a short distance from the town's defences. Archaeological deposits recorded behind the destroyed north frontage. Up to 1.3m of disurbed deposits overlay natural northampton sand and appeared to be largely Post-Medieval in date. Traces of earlier features were also noted. Pottery recovered dated to the 14th or 15th centuries.,

{4}Late Medieval/Post-Medieval pottery recovered from a watching brief carried out by G Cadman at 40-42 Abington Street.
