Monument record 1347/0/9 - Probable late Saxon boundaries, Grange Road

Excavation of a trench on the southern frontage of Grange Road identified three parellel ditches at right angles to the road, possibly to form boundaries. A group of pits and postholes was also identified. A relative paucity of medieval pottery indicates this frontage may have been unoccupied by the 12th century

{3} Late Saxon settlement may be denoted by 3 parallel ditches 5m apart, at right angles to the street. They contained small quantities of pottery of St. Neots type ware and could represent the boundaries and subdivisions of late Saxon plots. A group of seven post holes occurred nearby together with a sub-rectangular pit which also contained late Saxon pottery. The paucity of medieval finds and absence of related features suggests that the frontage was unpccupied by the 12th century.
