Full Description

{2} Fieldwalking to the east of the village has revealed a concentration of late Saxon and medieval pottery within the valley bottom bounded by the stream and the Chelveston Road. The linear distibution of finds extended 180m eastwards from the village but did not cross the stream so that its width was less than 60m. Any continuation to the south of the road may have been partly obscured by the modern cemetery and otherwise destroyed by nineteenth-century stone quarrying.
The pottery could indicated former occupation fronting one side of a medieval precursor to the Chelveston Road. The presence of 66 late Saxon pottery sherds may indicate that the occupation formed part of the original village layout rather than being secondary growth through medieval expansion. The sharp decline in the quantity of pottery from 134 medieval sherds to 14 late medieval suggests abandonment by the fifteenth century and its conversion to arable.
