Monument record 1477/0/2 - Romano-British activity, Swan Valley Way

A number of Roman ditches were observed during a watching brief in 1996. Pottery from the ditches suggests they dated to the early Roman period.

{1} Fieldwalking pre 1975 by R. Friendship-Taylor. Romano-British pot sherds and prehistoric flints at SP719580. Scatter of worked flints and possible Romano-British site.

{2} The bottoms of "ditches" survived at the southern end of the development. Roman ditches and pits were recorded during roadworks adjacent to the Rothersthorpe Road and it is likely that the ditches exposed by the recent development are of this period.

{3} Roman features were revealed to the north of the junction between Rothersthorpe Road and the new road. These extended to the N.E. on land subsequently developed by Charles Wells.

{4} An archaeological watching brief was maintained during the extensive earthmoving operations involved in the construction of the business park’s infrastructure between September 1995 and March 1996. Observation of the large area used as a borrow pit was periodically undertaken, but no archaeological features were revealed. During this time a number of ditches were revealed in an area covering 300m by 200m, where the newly constructed Business Park road intersected Banbury Lane. The pottery recovered suggests that they dated to the early Roman period.
