Full Description

{1} Find of an early Saxon brooch. "circular enriched with delicate filagree and pearls". Found at Welford c.1853; unlocated.

{2} May be another known brooch said to be from Husbands Bosworth.

{3} Shown to The Archaeological Institute

{5} Jewelled fibula found between Husband's Bosworth and Welford. In the possession of Mr B Bright, of King's Bench Walk, Temple.

{6} A gold brooch or buckle found near HUSBANDS BOSWORTH [refs. To Authy. 9]

{7} No further information was gained in field investigation. The present whereabouts of the brooch were not established.

{8} The brooch [reference to 5& 9] belongs to the annular type generally made of bronze. "the front is of gold ornamented with filigree and four pearl bosses each set with a slab of garnet, and is fastened with gold wire to a thin plate of silver forming the base."

{9} A brooch, 2 1/4 ins. In diameter "…was found about five or six years ago, with some human bones, in digging for
gravel, somewhere between Husbands Bosworth (Leicester) and Welford (Northampton)" [SP 640804 - SP 68 SW].

{12} Additional reference to Authority {9}. The locality is uncertain. Whether it was found within the limits of Northants. is open to question. There is a drawing of it in the Dryden Collection at Northampton and it is called 'the Naseby brooch'. In that case it would still be on the road to Bosworth and in Northants, but Dryden refers to the sale catalogue of the Baker collection (1842) and the name may be an error as 'Naseby' occurs on the line above. Refs description and illustration by Authority {5}.
