Full Description

{1} A hoard of stone axes were found in Stanwick village during building operations. Six flint axes were discovered together in 1938 in one place. SP9804 7125;

{2} Six axes were found 'at the base of a yew tree';

{4} 'Some' were in the possession of the Rector of Hargrave;

{5} More axes were buried in the foundations;

{5}Six flint axes were found in the foundation of 1 Woodlands; three are in Northampton Museum and one is in private possesion;

{11}Polished grey flint axe of neolithic type, found around 1946 when digging a garden, loaned to Northampton museum. The axe was found a few yards from another also in Northampton Museum. Both axes come from the garden of No.1 Woodlands, a few yards SE of the house. It is uncertain if they once formed part of a hoard of axes which was found in 1938 during excavation of the foundations of the house.

{12, 14} (SP 9804 7125) Six flint axes found here in 1938 during excavations for the erection of a dwelling house. Three are in Northampton Museum and one with Potter.

{13} Mr Rockingham, 3 Woodlands, Stanwick, son in law of the late A J Potter confirmed that the finds came from the foundations of No 1 Woodlands, SP 9804 7126. He can only remember 5 axes and retains one himself, of the others three are in Northampton Museum and one is in the possession of Mr Rollings, 51 Little Street, Rushden. Mrs Rockingham stated that there were more axes, but they were buried in the concrete of the foundations.
