Summary

A stone building with two circular ovens inside was excavated in 1973 prior to destruction by gravel extraction. It lay to the south of the moated enclosure and was probably in use from around 1400 to the mid 15th century

Full Description

{1} Excavation; D Hall; Mill Cotton; 14th century bakehouse excavated prior to gravel extraction;

{12}Bakehouse building excavated by David Hall - 35m south of the moat. Building 5.5m wide and at least 7m long. Two circular ovens lay within the structure each with a flue to the south. Large oven had a chamber 1.4m in diameter, chamber of small oven was 0.9m in diameter. The structure overlay earlier boundary ditches. Building believed to be constructed in mid 14th century and in use up to mid 15th century.
