Monument record 1816/0/9 - Probable Iron Age Features

Archaeological watching brief undertaken during pipeline construction identified Iron Age features.

{1} Initial fieldwalking for Fina Pipeline Project recovered two small sherds of Iron Age pottery. Trial excavation revealed ditches in Trenches 3, 5, 6 and 10. Also a posthole in Trench 3. All features were relatively shallow and no occupation debris was found within their fills.

{2} More extensive trenching revealed a complex of ditches and re-cuts, together with a number of postholes. The only dating evidence found in the ditches consisted of two small sherds of Iron Age pottery. Fig.13+14.

{3} Limited excavation ahead of pipeline construction by D.A. Jackson revealed a series of ditches, some re-cut, following the contour of the valley side adjacent to the river some 300m east of the enclosures. Eight postholes and a gully were also identified which could imply settlement. One of the ditches contained two sherds of Iron Age pottery.
