Monument record 1921/0/1 - Late Roman Settlement Remains Including Late C3rd Hoard

Please read our .

Summary

In 1954, during digging of silage pit, a number of Roman finds were made. There was Roman pottery of the third and fourth centuries, stone tesserae, brick fragments, roof tile, iron slag and animal bones. The finds have been interpeted as indicating a possible Roman settlement site or villa. A Roman coin hoard was also found here; it consisted of at least 111 Antoniniani (estimates vary from 124 to 140), 108 were recovered. These consist of one coin of Victorinus, one of Diocletian, 58 of Carausius and 48 of Allectus. The total of 111 was made up by two Carausius and one Allectus. The Carausius and Allectus coins consist of the rarer types chiefly from the London and Colchester Mints. They are in good condition, some retaining traces of the silver wash. Possibly a late 3rd century hoard.
