Full Description

{1} Documentary evidence, medieval/post-medieval. Identified as a meeting place of the Hamfordshoe Hundred in 1565 and probably earlier; Fieldname: Low Hill, Round Hill.

{3} Barrow (?)(SP 83996537), in the S of the parish, on sand and gravel at 100 m. above OD. It is 20 m. in diam. and 1 m. high and has been spread by ploughing. The site has been identified as the meeting place of Hamfordshoe Hundred, known as Low Hill, at least as early as 1565.

{2} The meeting-place of the hundred in 1565, and probably from the earliest times, was at 'Low Hill', which has been identified by Miss Wake with a mound in Round Hill field on the borders of Mears Ashby, commanding a view of the whole country-side. By the beginning of the 18th century the hundred court had been removed to Wellingborough.

{7} Fieldwalking gathered a Bronze Age sherd.

{8} (SP 83996537) Tumulus (AT)

{9} The mound has been spread by the plough and is under a crop of potatoes. No outer ditch was traces and no surface finds made. Published survey (25") revised. Classification as in Authy 1 not proved but probably correct.
