Summary

Many surface finds have been made in this field; finds include coins, pottery, glass, roof tiles, iron nails, a bronze brooch and thimble, iron objects, oyster shells and pieces of quernstones. Iron Age pottery and worked flints were also found. Two pits containing kiln debris and one quarry pit for sand grit have been excavated.

Full Description

{1} Surface finds from this field include late Iron Age and Roman pottery, over thirty coins, firebars, kiln waste, roof tiles, glass, nails, iron slag, oyster shells, many quern stones, an iron gouge and a bronze thimble. Worked flints have also been recorded. Two pits containing kiln debris and one quarry pit for sand grit have been excavated

{2} Fieldwalking since 1956 by R. Hollowell. Iron Age and Romano-British pot sherds, Roman coins, decorated and twisted bronze strips, bronze brooch spring, worked flints, iron nails, iron gouge, roof tiles, portion of puddingstone quern, pieces of glass. Field name: Pylon Field. Firebars and baked clay with grass impressions indicate pottery kilns.

{5} Surface finds from this field include late Iron Age and Roman pottery, over 30 coins, roof tiles, glass nails, iron slag, oyster shells, many quern stones, an iron gouge and a bronze thimble. Worked flints have also been recorded. One small piece of glass, possibly part of a cult vessel used in the worship of Jupiter, was also found.
