Summary

Excavation of a trench for a gas pipe line in 1966 revealed an extensive area of pits and ditches 1/3rd of a mile long at SP 846624 near Earls Barton. The pottery found was mainly of late IA or early Ro types, but distinctly IA pottery and an antler pick were found in a probable enclosure ditch at the northern end of the line, whilst to the south finds of late colour-coated RB ware were made.

Full Description

{1} Excavation of a trench for a gas pipe line in 1966 revealed an extensive area pf pits and ditches 1/3 mile long. Pottery mainly of the late Iron Age or early Roman types, but at the north end of the line the pottery from what was probably an enclosure ditch was of a more distinctly Iron Age type. Part of an antler pick also came from this ditch. From the south end of the site came some late colour coated Romano British pottery.

{2} The excavation of a pipeline in 1966 exposed many ditches and pits which produced late Iron Age and early Roman pottery.

{3} The pipeline runs across this site from SP 84646273 - SP 84836219 and the material came from the full extent. Finds held and classified by D Jackson. (MOW inspector).
