Monument record 2288/1/8 - Possible Neolithic cremations, Aldwincle

Please read our .

Summary

The remains of eleven cremations were found just to the southwest of the Neolithic monument Aldwincle 1 (SP 98 SE 18). When discovered, the pits had been largely removed in preparation for gravel extraction. None of the cremations were directly associated with any pottery vessels, although some sherds of Collared Urn and other Early Bronze Age forms/fabrics in the surviving upper fills of one pit suggests that the cremations may have been no later in date than the Early Bronze Age. However, this particular pit, while containing some cremated human bone, was larger than the others and its fill differed from the dark ashy material characteristic of them. Two of the cremations were adult males.
