Full Description

{1}{6}{7} The present wood covers only two-thirds of the more northerly part of the area enclosed by a double ditch. This double ditch has been ploughed out between Round Lown Wood and New Lodge.

{5} Banks and ditches are shown on the C18th maps as extending to the south of the wood into the modern arable, and although there is no indication on the ground they are still visible on aerial photographs. Together, these banks and ditches would have enclosed an area c.10 hectares and perhaps form the boundary of the original medieval deer park which was later extended.

{8} Earthwork ditch and broad bank (ditch on inside/W side) present at south end of the eastern part of the wood, set well back (up to 30m) from the present wood perimeter. This feature continues as low earthworks in the adjoining pasture field, extending to the SW (a short distance from the edge of the wood at very approximately cSP9584 8151 to SP9579 8143).
