Summary

Earthworks of a rectangular enclosure, possibly Bronze Age. A trial trench excavated across the enclosure ditch did not find any dating evidence. The tip lines confirm the presence of an internal bank.

Full Description

{1} The feature appears considerably larger from air photo evidence. NCCAP:SP9284/003+23-25.

{2} A roughly trapezoidal enclosure 25m x 15m, and bounded by a low bank and external ditch, which have been reduced by ploughing to less than 0.5m. There is no trace of an entrance.

{3} Enclosure (earthworks). A square, ditched enclosure on a hill top. Ploughed in 2002 but not visited.

{4} Trapezoidal enclosure at SP92908421. The remains of the enclosure are under root crop and were not available for inspection/survey.

{6} Depression within enclosure interpreted as a WWII bomb crater;

{7, 8} Machine-cut trial trench across the south-east side ditch of the enclosure in 1984, by G.Foard. The ditch was found to be 6ft 6ins deep and filled with sterile boulder clay except for a few fragments of animal bone near the base. The tip lines confirm the former presence of an internal bank.

{9} A ditched enclosure, trapeziod in shape, located at SP92908421.

{10} Centred to SP 929842 are the remains of the enclosure visible on air cover, it is under standing root crop and close inspection/survey was not possible.
