Summary

A Palaeolithic implement was found in 1882 in a ballast pit between Oundle and Elton stations in Fotheringhay parish. Palaeolithic Flint handaxes have been found in gravel pits near Fotheringhay.

Full Description

{1} A palaeolithic implement was found in the gravel underlying the Bronze Age burial, perhaps from the gravel pit at TL07089381.

{2} A fine Palaeolithic implement, found in 1882 in a ballast pit between Oundle and Elton stations in Fotheringhay parish, was in Sir John Evans' collection. [Possible Elton Ballast Pit at TL 079944.

{3} Pa Flint hand-axes have been found in gravel pits near Fotheringhay.

{4} There are many gravel and ballast pits in the above area which covers an approx field of five miles. Local museums and informants have no information re siting.
