Full Description
{1} A large rectangular building stood at almost right angles to the long axis of the house. 19.5 metres by 8.5m. This was later increased to 23.16 by 8.5m after an anex was built. Twice severely damaged by fire. Clay tiled roof. Had originally a furnace in the clay floor. In last rebuild the barn had a hearth. In the excavation carbonised wheat grains were found. Spelt, club wheat and rye, a few grains of barley. In addition to grasses, wild oats and a few cornfield weeds were also present. A worn coin of Arcadius (AD 388-95) was stratified from the later destruction layer. This implies use up to 400 AD and possibly beyond.
{2} A barn was loacted at the east end or north wing. Hearths were set into the natural clay floor. It burnt down in the mid C4th and was rebuilt with a mortar floor and moor hearths.
