Full Description

{1} Churchyard cross base found at TL06329615.

{3} Part of a Saxon cross shaft was found near the foundations in the west wall of the church. It was removed in 1883; drawings.

{4} Also found was a medieval cross base, three 'Palmers shells', silver chalice with paten and several stone coffins some decorated with crosses.

{6} At TL 0632 9615, the stone base of a churchyard cross. See GP AO/62/42/3. Viewed from south.

{7} Report of 1962 correct.

{8} The remains of the cross consist of the socket stone only. A Saxon cross shaft was discovered near the foundations of the west wall of the church during restoration work in 1883. This shaft is inside the church but there is not way of connecting it with the socket stone.

The socket stone has no features which suggest it is a particularly good example of its type, furthermore although its location suggests it may be in or near its original position, the area has been extensively cleared and turfed. Too much ground disturbance will have occurred to allow archaeological deposots to survive intact. In the light of this evidence the cross does not meet the criteria for scheduling.
